Vande Bharat passengers will now receive 500 ml water bottles, Railways informs.

In an effort to reduce drinking water waste, Indian Railways has announced that all Vande Bharat train passengers would henceforth receive 500 ml bottles throughout their journey.

Until today, passengers on the Vande Bharat Express were handed one-litre PDW bottles.

In short

  • Additional 500 mL bottles are available on demand at no additional cost.

  • Initiative tries to reduce water waste.

  • A similar initiative was implemented on Shatabdi trains in 2019.

The Indian Railways has announced that every Vande Bharat train passengers would henceforth receive a 500 mL bottle of Rail Need Packaged Drinking Water (PDW) during their journey. In addition, each passenger will receive another PDW bottle of 500 mL of water on demand at no additional cost. According to ANI, the move was made in an effort to reduce drinking water waste.

Until now, every Vande Bharat train passengers received one-litre water PDW bottles, comparable to Rajdhani Express. However, the railways have stated that not all passengers consume the whole one-litre of water, resulting in waste.

Furthermore, unlike Rajdhani trains, Vande Bharat trains do not traverse great distances, which may have contributed to the Railways' choice.

In 2019, a similar effort was implemented on Shatabdi trains, with passengers receiving 500 ml PDW bottles instead of one-litre ones.

Vande Bharat Express trains, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in 2019, are now running on more than 40 routes across India. Prime Minister Modi launched off the inaugural train on the New Delhi-Kanpur-Allahabad-Varanasi route on February 15, 2019. The trains operate at semi-high speeds and are outfitted with a variety of modern amenities, like WiFi access, big glass windows, 32-inch entertainment screens, longer footrests, and a little pantry, among others.

Meanwhile, the Railways' introduction of the new water bottle policy coincided with an unprecedented heat wave in numerous Indian states, including West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Karnataka, Jharkhand, and Telangana.
